Monument in Bogurzyn and other forms of preserving the memory of Fr. Władysław Skierkowski, historiographer of family life in Kurpie

2022 •

Wojciech Kućko

The Catholic Church has always cared for and continues to cherish the memory of the past. For centuries, the Catholic clergy tried to spread Polish culture related to faith in God and the Church. A beautiful page in this field was written by Fr. Władysław Skierkowski (1886-1941), priest of the Płock diocese, builder of the parish church in Płock-Imielnica, and, above all, a researcher and popularizer of Kurpie culture, songs and historiographer of marriage and family life. The aim of the article is to discuss the existing forms of preserving the memory of this priest and martyr, murdered in the German Nazi camp of Soldau. The text contains information about all plaques and inscriptions devoted to this priest-ethnographer, and the history of the birth of the idea and circ*mstances of erecting a monument to this priest in Bogurzyn in 2021, where he was baptized in the parish church and grew up until his studies at the Płock seminary.

Professor Jan Marian Małecki (1926-2017): In Memoriam

Stefan Gąsiorowski

Jan Małecki was a historian and rector of the the Kraków Academy of Economics. While his most important research was devoted to economic history, his achievements also included works related to the grand synthesis of Polish history, methodology, source studies, bibliography, and biography. In the 1985/1986 academic year, together with two other scholars, he began an open series of lectures in the Institute of History at the Jagiellonian University entitled ‘Jews in Polish History’. He was the author of a number of academic papers on the history of the Jewish community in Poland in both Polish and English. Of particular importance are his extensive source entries from Kraków customs registers concerning Jewish trade at the end of the 16th century and start of the 17th century, published by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. Małecki also popularized Jewish issues by including them in his numerous publications on the economic history of Poland and the history of Kraków. For many ...

The life of Józef Warszewicz (1812–1866): the Kraków period.

2014 •

Piotr Köhler

Józef Warszewicz (1812-1866), one of the most prolific nineteenthcentury plant collectors and one of the top field experts on tropical American plants of his time, after spending several years on expeditions to Central and South America, was to be employed as Inspector (the main gardener) of the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. His employment encountered resistance from the Ministry of Denominations and Education in Vienna. After a nearly four-year effort, Warszewicz took up post in Kraków in 1854. He worked on the reorganisation of the Botanical Garden and supervised new projects there. His activities contributed to an expansion of the Botanical Garden’s plant collections. Warszewicz also brought a herbarium and a collection of tropical animals to Kraków. During his life in Kraków, Warszewicz was widely honoured, and after his death, a monument was erected to him and one of Kraków’s streets was named after him.

A sketch of the history of the Radziwiłł family Berlin line until 1939

2018 •

Jarosław Durka

These short biographies of some of the characters so-called Berlin line of the Radziwiłłs show the long path they travelled from the late 18th to the mid-20th century. Although the short answer to the question of what were the specific situations they found themselves in and what political and social roles were played by individual representatives of the family during the Partitions and during the formation of an independent Poland. Despite the strong connection with the Hohenzollern dynasty and their certain place among the elite of the powerful Prussian state and then the German Empire, the vast majority chose to remain in opposition to the policy of denationalisation of Poles. And in the decisive time of the formation of the independent Polish state they stood alongside its creators.
