Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative oral history project Collection Description

Description

Many of the interviewees were charter customers and employees of GVEC and remembered a time before electricity was available to the residents of the Guadalupe River Valley. Interviewees were asked to comment on how their lives changed as a result of the availability of electricity, their level of satisfaction with the service provided by GVEC, and their opinion of GVEC’s intention to provide additional services such as satellite television or waste management.

Action Magazine Collection Description

Description

Clarence Samuel Kindrick (November 3, 1934 - ) is a Texas journalist, author and publisher. The longtime newspaper reporter and columnist is best known as the founder of Action Magazine in March 1975, and for his wild and wooly chronicling of the outlaw country music movement of the 1970s from his home base of San Antonio and Bulverde. This series contains a near-complete run of the newspaper from 1975-2018.

Ashes of Waco Collection Description

Description

Selections from journalist Dick Reavis’ research into the raid, siege and burning of the Branch Davidians’ Mount Carmel Center near Waco, Texas by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) and the FBI, as well as background on the Branch Davidian religious sect who lived there. Recognizing the raid, siege and burning of the Branch Davidian center as a major story that was being covered by the press only from the government’s perspective, Reavis spent two years reporting and investigating the incident, its players, causes, and immediate implications. Simon and Schuster published the resulting book, The Ashes of Waco, in 1995, making Reavis one of the few impartial experts on the subject. That same year he was called to testify before Congress in renewed hearings about what happened at Mount Carmel and why.

Austin Film Festival OnStory Archive Collection Description

Description

The Austin Film Festival, a non-profit organization founded in 1994 and based in Austin, Texas, hosts an annual Austin Film Festival & Conference, a gathering of professional and amateur screenwriters and filmmakers to participate in panel presentations, parties, Screenplay and Teleplay Competitions, and screenings. The collection consists of audio and video of recordings of Austin Film Festival & Conference panel presentations from 1994-2008.

Board of Regents Agendas Collection Description

Description

This ongoing collection consists of agendas made by the Board of Regents documenting their quarterly meetings. Agendas include general motions, committee reports from curriculum, planning and construction, finance, rules and regulations, minority enhancement, and remaining system agenda which includes reports on personnel, contracts, miscellaneous, and other business. The President Reports to the Board of Regents merge into the meeting Agendas in 1993. Organized chronologically by meeting date.

Board of Regents Meeting Minutes Collection Description

Description

This ongoing collection consists of meeting minutes and reports made by the Board of Regents. The collection is complete except for the 1919-20 (5th biennial) report. For the years 1911 through 1948, biennial reports were published in pamphlet format as a summary of two fiscal years and included attendance and enrollment statistics. Minutes exist for many meetings from 1911 to 1924. For the years 1919, 1921, and 1922, documentation also includes minutes from the Council of Normal College Presidents, which recommend agenda items to bring before the board.

Beginning with fiscal year 1943, the report format changes to include more details. Documentation includes reports submitted by each school in the system, financial activities of each school, and the items voted on by the board in each meeting. Organized chronologically by meeting date.

Board of Regents Regulations Collection Description

Description

The policies in the Regents' rules apply to each school in the system and apply to every primary aspect of the University community, including students, faculty, and staff. Rules are released when adopted, revised, or amended. Arranged chronologically.

Chautauquan: Collection Description

Description

Consisting of 117 issues published internally over 11 years, this newsletter contains information about institutional events, programs, research projects, and other news of interest to the campus community. Readers were provided with updates on topics such as enrollment, budget concerns, construction projects, grant funding announcements, concerts, and guest speakers. These newsletters provide a snapshot of the Texas State campus in the 1990s.

Constituting documents of Texas State University Collection Description

Description

As a state agency, the University does not have a constitution or by-laws. The institution was founded in 1899 by the 26th Legislature with SB260. The original 11 acres of land upon which the school was built was formerly known as Chautauqua Hill. The University Archives requested copies of these materials from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

Materials also include one complete and one incomplete draft of House Bill 696 of the 26th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature (1899), “An Act to provide for establishing, governing and maintaining a State normal school at San Marcos, and to be known as the Southwest Texas Normal School.” Also included is the wrapper used to store and identify the bill drafts. Although the records are undated, the wrapper was pre-printed for the 26th Regular Session with the date 1899.

Craddock Oral History Collection Description

Description

This online collection consists of a small number of oral history interviews conducted by Dr. Emmie Craddock and her students as part of her graduate seminar, Social and Intellectual History of the United States. While her students produced the majority of these interviews in the spring of 1974, Craddock herself conducted several additional interviews during the spring of 1978.

It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll Collection Description

Description

Ron Young, longtime music journalist, songwriter and, musician grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and was the founder and publisher of the pioneering indie music newspaper It’s Only Rock ’N’ Roll. The publication chronicled the rise of punk and New Wave music in San Antonio and Austin, as well as local and regional rock ’n’ roll, blues and heavy metal acts.

Lyndon Baines Johnson Collection Description

Description

This collection consists of materials relating to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s relationship to his alma mater, as compiled by the University News Service. The bulk of the collection consists of original photographs of Johnson’s many visits to campus and newspaper articles covering the events of Johnson’s political career, especially as they related to the university. This includes the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

A collection of StoryCorps-like audio clips of students discussing their experiences at Texas State University. The pilot program for this project was conducted during the Spring 2021 semester and was limited to graduating seniors who were asked to reflect on their time at Texas State. NASA Oral History Project Collection Description

Description

From 1999-2001, NASA partnered with History students at Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State) to conduct interviews with former employees who lived in the Central Texas area. Over the three years of the project, Texas State graduate students conducted approximately 60 interviews with NASA retirees.

Pennington Funeral Home Ledgers Collection Description

Description

The Pennington Funeral Home is a family-owned business in San Marcos, Texas, that began over a century ago with Mr. A.B. Rogers. The Pennington family purchased the funeral home in 1943 and three successive generations have run the business since. This collection consists of the funeral registers from the Pennington Funeral Home from 1902-1944 as well as a ledger from the San Marcos Cemetery Association.

Russell Lee Collection Description

Description

The Russell Lee Collection came to The Wittliff Collections through donations since 1986 by Jean Lee, Bill Wittliff, Dow Chapman and Wally Ellinger. This collection of photographs, correspondence, personal and legal documents, artifacts, paintings and publications ranges in date from 1901-1991, the bulk of the material dates from 1936-1942.
